Retailing is geographically tied. To conduct a retail business in a foreign market, a company must have a physical presence there. Although manufacturers can produce a product at home and then export it through the world, retailers must be physically present whenever they are doing business. Each country in the world has different rules and regulations for retailing. To operate in such disparate environments requires both knowledge and experience.
