PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Administrative Responsibilities

1997-            International Studies & Programs (ISP)

Present        Associate Dean

            Work with the Dean to coordinate ISP strategic planning with other units campus-wide, plan and administer the annual budget, consult with academic colleges on internationalization and international inter-institutional linkage agreements, staff and supervise ISP personnel, develop country and region (international) faculty working groups, develop strategic planning for international student recruitment, plan and implement the new INS Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) in the Office for International Student and Scholars for Michigan State University’s (MSU’s) 4,150 international students and scholars, co-coordinate the external review of MSU’s area studies and NCA accreditation case study of internationalization at MSU, cooperate with ACE and five other U.S. higher education institutions on a DOE FIPSE-funded planning project to assess international learning. Serve as Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays alternate campus representative for students, faculty and visiting international scholars; represent the ISP Dean=s office on university committees; meet with international dignitaries and visitors.

           Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU)—The position of Associate Dean also includes the administration and management of the JCMU, a consortium program of the 15 Michigan public universities.  JCMU offers year-round study abroad academic and internship experiences for American students, as well as English language and culture programs for Japanese citizens. On average, JCMU hosts over 160 American students and 200 Japanese citizens annually at the Center in Japan.

           Responsibilities include administering and managing the Center in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan and a separate administrative office at MSU.  Oversight of academic programs (development and delivery), $1.2 million budget, grant writing and fund raising, operations, staffing of 16 full- and part-time personnel (academic, advising, administrative, clerical/technical and visiting scholars) and the National Security Education Program-funded Environmental Sciences in Japan Program. Also, negotiate and implement student exchange agreements between Japan’s University of Shiga Prefecture and Shiga (National) University with the 15 JCMU universities in Michigan; plan and host bi-annual JCMU Consortium meetings; collaborate with MSU’s Honors College to administer the Michigan-Shiga High School Student Exchange Program; testify and/or consult with State of Michigan legislators, Chief Academic Officers of the State Universities of Michigan, and Governor’s Office on international education funding.  Travel to Japan is required.
